The advent of self love is upon us. Social media has played a huge role in this phenomenon, which motivational speakers and preachers of the word long struggled to impress upon their audiences. Whether these choose days, crush days and selfies are a true indication of self love is a topic for another day. We have been told not to believe everything we see on social media. That said, I love people who love themselves and below are some of the reasons why;

1. They are confident. They believe they can only be the best version of themselves and need no validation from any other. They consider themselves a brand, which is an admirable trait.
2. They are mature. They have accepted their strengths and weaknesses. They know there is always someone better but that does not put them down. They believe they have their own journeys and are destined for greater heights.

3. They have believed the Biblical story of creation that we are all created in the image of God and as such with all their physical flaws they are the splitting image of God. They are perfect in their imperfections and nothing stops them from flaunting their beauty.

However, we should be careful that self love does not lead to self obsession. Obsession, on the other hand, is where one thinks they are the best thing to ever fall on mother earth. A person obsessed with self is not amenable to correction or advise. In their world, they are always right. They lead and the rest follow.

I have stumbled upon some Facebook comments and posts which, in my opinion, screamed ‘obsession’. Here are some examples;

1.’This is my wall, you are free to start your line of argument on your wall.’ How does one grow when they refuse to entertain divergent views?

2. ‘I post whatever I want, if you don’t like it unfriend me.’ This outburst normally follows a private conversation which was meant as advise.

3. ‘I am about to unfriend anyone who never likes or comment on my posts.’ This normally attracts a number of likes and comments with friends begging not to be blocked. I am thinking ‘why not just block?’.

Well, after all the blabbering, I am still a proponent of self love. There isn’t enough love in the world from other people so loving oneself is the best gift. That way, when the rare occasion of external love presents itself, it does not make or break you. Why?beacause there is already enough love within.
