Dear Christian

Dear Christian,

I hope this finds you well.

The silly season is upon us and I just wanted to remind you to be mindful of a few things while you are busy electioneering.

1. Pray for your country and your leaders

Many people downplay prayer but not you, NO! You know better and the Bible instructs you to pray without ceasing.

But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. Jeremiah 29:7 ESV

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 1 Timothy 2:1-3 ESV

I know you have leaders that you love. You could be active in politics or just a patriotic citizen but love your country and leaders enough to pray for them. God expects you to stand in the gap for them for you to experience peace. The scriptures above are some of the many scriptures that encourage you to pray. It is vital.

2. Respect your leaders

Politics is a very emotive subject. Tempers flare at every turn but one of your values is self-control. Galatians 5 sums it all when it comes to how you should conduct yourself. It reads, “but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

You should not be found among those who use foul language against leaders and other opponents. It is okay to disagree but never forget who you are. When the silly season is over, we hope to still hold you in high regard.

Here is another sobering scripture;
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Romans 13:1 ESV

I don’t want to believe that this scripture applies only to the leaders of your political party. It applies to all leaders.

3. Speak up

Do not be afraid to make your voice heard in the political space. Your voice is the voice of God, well, that’s if it’s consistent with the word. In the history of the Bible, God sent prophets to speak to leaders. It is your duty to speak the mind of God.

You are not meddling in political affairs. It is your right. You are a citizen and a voter and therefore whatever happens in the political space affects you. That is why you must be informed so that you pray informed prayers and also vote wisely.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14ESV

4. Be active in politics

You have been sidelined for long. You were told politics is a dirty game. All the more reason for you to do it, don’t you think? They have told you the business world is corrupt and evil but you still pursue business. So my dear, if you want to stand for office, do so with a clean conscience. Does the name Martin Luther King ring a bell? How about Nelson Chamisa? I know if we were to name names we’d take all day.
When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan. Proverbs 29:2 NLT

It is much safer for you to be in authority, not so? The scripture above just confirms it.

5. Make positive confessions

I cannot overemphasize this one my beloved. The temptation is high to join the pessimists and cry war, for example. You could join the lamentations. You could chant ‘our nation is going down the drain, oh our country is going to the dogs.’ NO, NO, NO! Never join that chorus. You know better. You are a student of faith. What do you believe? What prayers have you made for your country? Do you believe in God who answers prayer? Then act like it. Tame your tongue.

May you continue to be in good health.

Love,

Onalenna

So enlightened, i’m one of the people who really doesn’t give much attention to politics, only do when something has happened or threatening the peace of the country

Hey Ona, You have drawn a clear line between politics and Christianity. Many are times we want to distance ourselves from politics giving all such reasons as being dirty, for the uneducated, for old people etc… however, in most government institutions or departments, all employees are expected to be apolitical. precise choice of scripture
